A Crucial Time for Independent Media

The House Commerce Committee is debating legislation this week that could have a big impact on the future of independent media. The COPE Act (Communications Opportunity, Promotion and Enhancement Act) contains two concerning provisions, one that could limit local control of public access TV stations and one that strikes a blow at “net neutrality” in favor of telecom giants like Verizon and Comcast.

A number of groups have been keeping on top of these attacks, launching campaigns to protect the few remaining laws preventing further corporate media consolidation, including Save the Internet.com, Save Access, and Common Cause.

Congress could be voting soon, so take advantage of the research already done by these media activists and use the above links for easy ways to contact your congressional representatives about your support of independent media.

And thanks!
