Alternatives to Democracy
If you were losing interest in Latin American politics and elections (due to your ADD) following Evo Morales’ triumph in December, a new month and the new year provide more reason to better acquaint yourself with the political movements and popular movements of Latin America.
And, her name is Michelle Bachelet.
Bachelet embodies many firsts, not only Chile’s first female president. She is the first torture-survivor to be elected. The first single mom president. Incredibly, an agnostic in a country where 90% of the people identify as Roman Catholic.
A victory so resounding that the conservative editorial pages of the Miami Herald put it:
Ms. Bachelet’s success is not a victory for the left or any political faction. It is a victory for an entire country and for the cause of democracy in Latin America.
