Cynthia McKinney in Toledo 4-30 / “American Blackout” Premier

Documentary “AMERICAN BLACKOUT” TO PREMIER IN TOLEDO

On Sunday, April 30, 2006 at 4 pm, the award winning film documentary, The American Blackout from GNN will be presented. Also, Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) and the film’s producer will lead a discussion on several aspects of the film. The film will be shown at Indiana Avenue Missionary Baptist Church, 640 Indiana Ave., Toledo, Ohio. It is free and open to the public.

The film chronicles McKinney’s election campaigns of 2002 and 2004. It also sheds a different light on the 2004 national election. Following the movie, McKinney will discuss the continued problems related to voting rights.

Of special interest, is the portion of the film that examines the November 2004 Election in Ohio and the voting problems that resulted in the unprecedented challenge to the Electoral College by Ohio Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs-Jones. The film, also, features interviews with US Congressional Representatives: John Lewis, John Conyers, and Bernie Sanders.

Additionally, there will be information for voters on their rights under current Ohio Law. This event is being sponsored by a coalition of organizations and individuals, such as the League of Women Voters, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Perry Burroughs Democratic Club, Black Women’s Democratic Club, Green Party of Northwest Ohio and various labor groups.

The documentary won the 2005 Sundance Special Jury Prize Film Award, Best Feature Documentary at Cinequest Film Festival and the Greg Gund Memorial Stand Up audience award at the Cleveland International Festival.
