Holocaust Remembrance Day
I recently had the opportunity to interview two World War II veterans for a radio series I produced to mark Holocaust Remembrance Week and the 60th Anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps. It’s estimated that more than 1000 veterans from the “Good War” die every day, and I felt fortunate to talk to these two vibrant men who, in their retirement, lead quite active and meaningful lives.
Both Bob Albro and Al Tarbell only recently began sharing their experiences during the war, including helping to liberate the Dachau and Wobblein concentration camps. Sixty years ago, both men were in the Anzio Beachhead invasion in Italy. Amazingly, they also both served for years on the front lines without sustaining any major wounds. Currently, the two men live only miles apart near Syraucse, New York.
Here, is an audio snapshot of their lives abroad.
As always, thanks for listening . . .

Excellent work. What a treasure! Thank you for doing this important work. You are recording history.
Will you be publishing the interviews? If not, how can I get the full versions? I would love to hear them.

Thanks for the comments Keith and Nicole. I may try to produce a longer-format version of the interviews, but I personally wasn’t on mic, so it will be hard to publish as an unedited interview (note to self: invest in better mic!).
Thanks again for listening! And if you ever have the chance, interview your older friends, neighors, and relatives. Even if you don’t have a specific venue to air the material right away, you may find one down the road and the original experience of just asking someone to tell their stories can be so rewarding.
Best, Catherine
