Nothing Says ‘Protection of Marriage’ Quite Like a Sex Scandal
As gay marriage amendments take effect in Canada and Spain, the U.S. seems content with its position as the world’s Puritanical laughingstock. Don Sherwood, a Republican Representative from Pennsylvania and prominent “family values” ideologue, finds himself in the middle of a $5.5 million civil suit against a 29 year-old woman who alleges he abused her during their five-year affair. Our dashing hero (married, and a father of three) is contending the abuse claim, while admitting to the fling. Rushing to his defense is Senatorial bigot Rick Santorum:
“I don’t know how that’s going to shake out,” Santorum said. “All I would suggest is that, again, until we know all the facts and we look at the job that Congressman Sherwood is doing and make decisions based on the facts and the work he’s doing.”
When asked whether the allegations have hurt the Republican Party, Santorum did not answer the question directly, saying “I think what hurts and helps the Republican Party is what we’re doing in serving the American people.”
Santorum cited a highway bill he said will bring economic development to Northeastern Pennsylvania and an energy bill that should address high gas prices. “It’s important to focus on what our job is for the American public,” he said.
The senator said the media likes to focus on racy and scandalous stories. “The American public would like to see results,” said Santorum.
My, how the conservative stance has changed since the days of Clinton/Lewinski! This is the most egregious example of values-issue hypocrisy since…well…last week, when the Catholic church– that mighty bastion of sexual decency– admonished the Canadian gay marriage bill.
Why is this important? GOP cronies, led by Ken Mehlman, continue to beat the family values drum while rallying potential voters, particularly minorities. Here’s hoping that Sherwood only helps expose the sham behind that strategy.
