Uniting What? America or DC staff?
Late in last night’s Veep debate, Gwen Ifill asked how the candidates intended to unite the country. Cheney’s answer was an interesting rumination on how the debate in Washington has been acrimonious and partisan. While this is doubtless an interesting subject for those in the Beltway, it wasn’t the question Ifill asked. I don’t believe that Cheney was ducking the question (for a change), I assume Dick Cheney actually believes that a Democratic committee vice-chair in Congress getting along with a Republican Bush cabinet undersecretary represents a united America. And that’s a real shame.
Fortunately, John Edwards and John Kerry understand that uniting America requires that all Americans be given the same chance to succeed. The ‘two Americas’ that John Edwards speaks of aren’t cliques in capital hill committee rooms, they are the affluent who are willing to free-ride on the work of the rest of us and the struggling people who want dignity, security, and the ability to work to get ahead. Dick, let the clue be yours…
