Watching the VPs go at it

It took us about 20 minutes to get used to the idea that we were actually watching two skilled debaters go at it, as opposed to watching one debater and one bumbling fool as with the first presidential debate. After that, it started to look like Luke Skywalker battling Darth Vader. As for substance, there’s a pretty big difference between an approach that says, let’s buy your votes with your children’s money (which is what big tax cuts and huge deficits are all about) and an approach that says, let’s have some semblance of fiscal responsibility, including taxing the rich.

Cheney’s best moment was when he used his rebuttal time to thank Edwards for his kind words about his family. It almost made him seem human, as opposed to seeming like an evil Iago-cyborg, much like his positive comments about gay marriage earlier this year almost made him seem human.

I learned something interesting about the debate prep. While Ohio Congressman Rob Portman ‘played’ John Edwards in the dry-runs that Cheney held, the DNC asked Lex Luther to stand in for Cheney in their rehearsals.
