White Hat Gets Lesson in Totalitarianism
When even white-hat frat guys run the risk of being caught in Bush’s “national security” net, who then is safe? This October in Massachusetts, a mild-mannered college senior was trying to do some research on totalitrianism and made the mistake of requesting Mao Tse-Tung’s Little Red Book from the UMass Dartmouth library. Agents of the Department of Homeland Security, evidentially all caught up on their work stopping threats to the US, took time out of their busy schedules to first visit the library and then pop by the student’s home. While this preposterous intrusion into people’s reading habits, affront to liberty, and ludicrous waste of taxpayer money shouldn’t surprise us, it is a vivid reminder of why this scandal is going to take more than a few solemnly-mouthed 9/11 reminders for the Bush creeps to get out from under.
On the upside, however, no one can doubt that the senior, who was taking an undergraduate level course on fascism and totalitarianism, got a rare and real-world opportunity to experience totalitarianism first-hand.
